History of the mill
In Tampere there has been very large mills. This house, where you are now having dinner is one of them. In the year 1903, this building was occupied by Hämeen Maanviljeliäin Kauppa Oy’s steam mill. You can still see letters HMK on top of our front door. Berndt Blom designed this 3-story red brick building in the year 1902. This building is one of the few still maintaining mills of Tampere.
In 1980, the whole Tulli area was renovated and started to change into a modern business- and office concentration. Our restaurant started in April 1987. At the same time in the northern end of the lot finished a parking garage designed by Antti Tähtinen.
The most famous mill of Tampere was Tampereen Mylly which once lied where Tampere Sähkölaitos nowadays lies. The oldest people living in Kalkku and Epilä district might remember their own mill. There was a very large wheat mill in Messukylä also. The wheat was first cleaned and sometimes even washed and dried in the mills. Sometimes the wheat had to be moistened to be suitable for the machines.
Extended mills usually had gristmill. The stone mill was used especially for rye full milling. In hammermills the grain was pushed through a dense sieve. Our mill stands on a solid land, but usually they where built next to flowing rivers and rapids to easily get energy. If there were no water, they build windmills.
The taxman noticed early Finlands numerous mills. In the year 1600 they paid mill tax, which was a indirect tax paid of grinded grain. 1634 parliament it was changed to direct tax. The tax was called “spiritual money” by common people.
Åkerlund street, Tulli area 1900
